Redouane Chekkouri [also identified as Echekkouri] was born in February 1972 in Asafi, Morocco. Chekkouri and his brother moved to Jalalabad, Afghanistan, where they worked for the Moroccan Islamic Fighting Group. After 9/11, Chekkouri was captured by the United Islamic Front for the Salvation of Afghanistan, which transferred him to U.S. custody. He was sent to Guantanamo Bay on April 30, 2002. Chekkouri was released to Morocco on July 31, 2004. Upon returning to Morocco, Chekkouri (along with four other ex-Guantanamo detainees) was put on trial for charges related to terrorism, but was eventually acquitted in 2007.
