Mohammed Souleimani Laalami was born in January 1976 in Casablanca, Morocco. In November of 2001, he was captured by the Pakistani military and turned over to the U.S. military. He was transferred to Guantanamo Bay on February 2, 2002. Laalami was released to Morocco four years later, on February 7, 2006. Upon his return to Morocco, Laalami was convicted of “forming a criminal group” and sentenced to five years, however he won his appeal in May 2007 and was acquitted. In 2013, he was killed while fighting in Syria. Another former Guantanamo detainee, Brahim Benchakroun, delivered a eulogy at his funeral. In 2014, Benchakroun was also killed while fighting in Syria.
