Mamdouh Habib was born in June 1955 in Egypt, and later moved to Australia. In October 2001, he was captured in Pakistan by American forces. He was rendered to Egypt in November 2001, where he was tortured in the U.S. extraordinary rendition program. In April 2002, he was sent to Bagram, Afghanistan, and one month later he was transferred to Guantanamo Bay. Habib claims that he was tortured while in American and Egyptian hands and forced to sign confessions saying he was connected to al-Qaeda. Habib was released from Guantanamo to Australia on January 27, 2005.
