Golden Years – Witness to Guantanamo

Golden Years

Abdul Ghappar Abdul Rahman is a Uyghur from the Xinjiang autonomous region. He was born in March 1973 in Kucha. In June 2001, Abdul Rahman fled to Pakistan to avoid persecution in China. He then moved to a small town outside of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, where he lived with a number of other Uyghur refugees. After the September 11 attacks, Abdul Rahman and a group of Uyghurs crossed the border into Pakistan to avoid the U.S. bombardment. Once in Pakistan, Abdul Rahman and his fellow Uyghurs were kidnapped and sold to U.S. military forces. He was then transferred to Guantanamo Bay. Although he was cleared for release in August 2003, Abdul Rahman remained in Guantanamo until October 2009. He was released to Palau, a remote nation of 20,000 people in the western Pacific Ocean, near Guam. He has since left Palau, and his current residence is not confirmed.
