Alka Pradhan currently services as Human Rights Counsel for the Guantanamo Bay Military Commission of the Department of Defense. She represents Ammar al Baluchi, who is one of five defendants charged with facilitating the 9/11 attacks.

Previously, Pradhan had been Counter-Terrorism Counsel at Reprieve, where she represented several Guantanamo Bay detainees. She also worked on behalf of civilian victims of the targeted killing drone program in Yemen and Pakistan, and has also advised the U.S. government on compliance with international legal obligations.

Additionally, Pradhan was Counsel for The Constitution Project’s Task-Force on Detainee Treatment, co-authoring a comprehensive report on U.S. detention practices since 2001, and also served as a consultant for the U.N. Human Rights Committee.

She received a BA in International Relations, an MA in International Law and South Asia Studies from Johns Hopkins University, and a JD from Columbia Law School. She also holds an LLM in International Human Rights from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Pradhan has written numerous articles and op-eds, and is a frequent commentator in the media on international law and counter-terrorism issues.
