A Political Maneuver

Biography
After 9/11, Joseph Margulies became Counsel of Record in Rasul v. Bush (2004), the case that established statutory habeas rights for Guantanamo detainees. Presently he is counsel for Abu Zubaydah, a "high-value" detainee who was held in CIA black sites and whose interrogation in 2002 and 2003 prompted the Bush Administration to draft the infamous "torture memos." In June 2005, at the invitation of Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA), he testified at the first Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on detainee issues. Margulies is the former Associate Director of the Roderick MacArthur Justice Center, and a former attorney with the Texas Capital Resource Center. He is currently a Professor of Law and Visiting Professor of Government at Cornell University, and is the author of Guant√°namo and the Abuse of Presidential Power.
