Dr. Sondra Crosby is Associate Professor of Medicine and Public Health at Boston University Schools of Medicine and Public Health. She focuses on care of asylum seekers, refugees and torture survivors.

Dr. Crosby is co-founder and co-director of the Boston University Forensic Medical Evaluation Group. The group provides medical forensic documentation of torture, ill treatment and other physical abuse including female genital mutilation. Dr. Crosby is one of the first civilian doctors permitted to travel to Guantanamo to independently examine detainees. Accordingly, she has evaluated the effects of torture, cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment on former Guantanamo Bay detainees.

In 2008, Dr. Crosby co-authored the comprehensive report for Physicians for Human Rights entitled Broken Laws, Broken lives: Medical Evidence of Torture by US Personnel and Its Impact. She has also been published in numerous peer review journals about the medical and psychological effects of torture.

Dr. Crosby has taught both nationally and internationally on caring for survivors of torture and on performing forensic medical evaluations utilizing the Istanbul Protocol, a set of international guidelines for the documentation of torture.
