Jamil Dakwar is Director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Human Rights Program. His work focuses primarily on issues concerning counter-terrorism, racial justice, immigrants’ rights, women’s rights, and criminal and juvenile justice, as well as issues concerning Guantanamo. Mr. Dakwar is also the ACLU’s Main Representative to the United Nations. He has testified on the US’s human rights violations before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, U.N. human rights bodies, and the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe. Before joining the ACLU in 2004, Mr. Dakwar worked for Human Rights Watch, where he focused on issues of torture and detention in Egypt, Morocco, Israel, and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Prior to moving to the US, he was a senior attorney with Adalah, a human rights group in Israel. He graduated from Tel Aviv University and has a graduate degree from NYU School of Law.
