Bahtiyar Mahnut (born in 1976) and his brother Arkin Mahmud were among 22 Uyghurs detained at Guantanamo. The men had fled Chinese persecution and were sold to US forces in December 2001. The brothers did not see each other again until 2003. They were detained without charge for seven and-a-half years beginning in 2002. Mahnut was granted habeas corpus in October 2008, however he was held at Guantanamo until Switzerland granted both Bahtiyar and Arkin political asylum in February 2010. The two have been living in the Swiss canton of Jura since March 2010.
