Abdul Rahim Janko

  • Country of origin:
  • Charges brought:

Abdul Rahim Janko is a Syrian-Kurd who traveled as a student to Afghanistan in 2000 where he affiliated with a jihadist group. After a few weeks in Afghanistan, he was taken, interrogated and tortured by al-Qaida and Taliban leaders. He then confessed (possibly falsely and under torture) to espionage for the United Arab Emirates, Israel and the United States, as well as sodomy, and was imprisoned for two years by the Taliban until Northern Alliance forces transferred him to U.S. custody. Janko was then detained in Guantanamo for seven years. His lawyers contested his detention, stating by the time the U.S. declared a war on terrorism, Janko was already being held by the Taliban as an American spy. In 2009, he was released to Belgium.
